The Antikythera Mechanism: An Ancient Computer

The Antikythera Mechanism, an astonishing piece of ancient Greek technology, was recovered in 1901 from a shipwreck off the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera. It is widely considered to be the **world's oldest known analogue computer**. Initially, the corroded bronze mass, which was no larger than a shoebox, was overlooked by archaeologists, who focused instead on the statuary and pottery found at the wreck site, dating back to the **first century BCE**.

It was not until the 1950s that physicist and historian of science Derek de Solla Price began detailed analysis, proposing that the object was a highly complex mechanical device. Later, advanced imaging techniques, particularly **X-ray tomography**, revealed an intricate system of at least **30 precisely meshing bronze gears**. This level of complexity was unmatched in the archaeological record for over a thousand years, suggesting a technological peak that was briefly achieved and then lost.

The mechanism's purpose was astronomical. Its geared system was designed to predict astronomical positions and eclipses for decades in advance. The front face showed the position of the **Sun** and **Moon** against the background of the zodiac and calendar rings. The back featured two large spirals displaying the cycles of timing: the **Saros cycle** for predicting eclipses, and the **Metonic cycle**, which synchronises the solar year and the lunar month. The device also corrected for the Moon’s elliptical orbit, requiring an ingenious system of differential gearing.

The sophistication of the Antikythera Mechanism forces a significant reassessment of ancient Greek science. It demonstrates a mastery of theoretical mathematics and precision engineering previously attributed only to much later cultures. Current research suggests it may have been constructed in a centre of astronomical learning, possibly by the school of the famed astronomer **Hipparchus** or the engineer Archimedes, challenging the traditional historical narrative of technological development.
